I believe very much in the potential of our TEXT-AND-TALK Academy TEFL Course location here at Khon Kaen University, Thailand, and have enjoyed every minute of my time gradually assisting intelligent and sincere (though sometimes ‘scruffy’) wanna-be teachers to blossom into the wonderfully effective classroom instructors they have become by course end.

I myself have a passion for teaching, and particularly enjoy training others to teach. Indeed, I get great satisfaction from imparting skills onto my TEFL course trainees and doing my part to help them provide for themselves and for their families, as well as their students.

Accordingly, the following is a little story I hope you might enjoy, at least at those times when you, even after becoming a TEFL-trained teacher, begin to question yourself about your teaching effectiveness.

Class Deception

In the classroom of a rural school near a field where water buffalo and other farm animals lazed, stood a teacher contemplating his competency to teach effectively – for row after row of mouths shaped like O’s made up his students’ physiognomy.

“My children why do you tire of my teaching so?” he asked, head hung low.

“Well”, said the wisest of the students, “this is a question to which I think I have found the answer myself.  I firmly believe the reason our yawning is so intensely infectious is not, as you may fear, a result of your teaching – for that is wondrous, indeed – but rather its existence can be attributed to the nature of yawning itself.
 
“The most primary and pressing need in the lives of all of us is to breathe. And what is a yawn but essentially a very deep breath – its origin animated by arousal, and seldom, if ever at all, sparked by soporific schooling – and certainly not yours, dear teacher!

“Now, it is a very well-known fact that one human being can affect another by what is called ‘suggestion’. A child sees another child eating a ball of sticky rice, and of course the child would like some himself; one child witnesses another child cry, and he himself begins to cry; a group of children observe others jumping for joy, then they themselves feel compelled to do the same; or if students aplenty are pouting and complaining for some reason, then the remaining students will feel obliged to act similarly.

“I believe that we can discover a great principle here, dear teacher.  It is that suggestion is the more powerful, the nearer the suggested thing is to the needs of life.
 
“That, for instance, is why the suggestion of fear is so powerful when a crowd of people take fright and run at the sound of fireworks exploding.

"Dear teacher, of all that is most urgent and constant to the life-sustaining needs of a human, what, pray tell, could there be that’s more vital to that end than breathing?”

“Well, well, then, I see. So I was not the cause of all the yawning, after all!” exclaimed their relieved teacher upon hearing this fine testimony (accompanied, of course, by a small ripple of laughter in the classroom)

“Now, let us return to our dictation exercises."

“The fat cat sat on a mat and ate a rat.”
“The fat cat sat on a mat and ate a rat.”
“The fat cat sat on a mat and ate a rat.”

Etc.

Of course, the precocious student (a ‘smart aleck', do doubt) wanted an ‘A’ in the course, and probably got it! But the teacher also benefited from hearing the truth, whatever its source.
